Solar Powered Birdbath Waterfall Rock Review

Solar Powered Birdbath Waterfall Rock

I'm a technologically challenged, not very rich 72-year-old-grandmother who lives in the country and is extremely concerned about the environment.
While I've always wanted a birdbath fountain, I didn't want to get involved with expensive, complicated plumbing or have to depend on electrical house power to move the water. Instead, I wanted my birdbath fountain to be solar-powered with a battery backup, easy to install, low maintenance and, (yes, I'll admit it), cute.
The Solar-powered Birdbath Waterfall Rock fits my requirements exactly.
When it arrived, I unpacked my Birdbath Waterfall Rock and its accompanying parts with some trepidation. My more technologically gifted spouse instantly grabbed the instructions and took charge. Fortunately, the instructions were written by someone who understands regular English, which is a nice change, and they are concise and to the point.
The first thing we realized was that we needed a new birdbath to support our Waterfall Rock with a deep enough bowl to submerge the pump. However, we didn't want to pay an arm and a leg for it. Before we went any further, we drove around the area and looked at birdbaths and fountains ranging from the small and relatively cheap to the unbelievably elaborate, huge and expensive.
It soon became obvious that none of the local nurseries was offering a birdbath for sale with the bowl depth we needed that was anywhere close to our modest price range. So it was on to Plan B.
I'd almost given up when I found a clear plastic liner for a large flower pot base for $1.00 in Walmart's garden department. It not only looks nice, it's exactly the right depth to submerge the pump. Being the liner is quite flimsy, I bought four. In another part of the store, I came across a galvanized aluminum dog's water dish that was the right size to support the liner. Finally, we located a two piece cement birdbath on display in WalMart's parking lot for less than $25.00 and were on our way.
As recommended in the instructions, we set the solar panel outside for at least two days to charge its battery. Actually, it was more than two days but we wanted to be sure. However, when my husband suggested putting the solar panel on the car's roof, I vetoed the idea on the grounds that one of us, (probably me), would drive off and forget it was there.
In the meantime, we attached the pump to the Waterfall Rock's insides and waited. Finally, when the solar panel was charged to our satisfaction, we found a spot to set it on top of one of the bird feeder poles, filled our homemade insert with water and plugged in the Waterfall Rock. As noted in the product description and instructions, the wire from the Waterfall Rock was plenty long enough to reach the top of the feeder pole.
Then we switched on the solar panel and, Voila! The water came burbling out of the top of the Birdbath Waterfall Rock and ran gently down the sides exactly as represented. At that point I thought, "It can't be this simple!" but it was.
As a final touch, I had set a five gallon plastic bucket under our window air conditioner a couple of days before. The humidity has been so high the bucket's been filling up every eight hours. This means, in addition to the fountain's solar power, the water, which I'm storing in recycled gallon milk jugs, is free.
The final test was, would the birds like it?
The answer is yes. One of them, in fact, had a perfectly lovely time splashing around in the surrounding liner and I'm sure there'll be more.
Since we have a two acre yard with lots of trees and a correspondingly large bird population including finches, buntings, cardinals, orioles, towhees, doves, robins, mockingbirds, thrashers, bluebirds, cowbirds, starlings, sparrows and a couple of extremely noisy wrens, one such fountain is obviously not going to be enough.
I like this little fountain so well, in fact, I'll probably get another before too long.
Not only is the Solar Birdbath Waterfall Rock totally charming, we were able to put it together with little or no trouble. It actually worked on the first try and I'm awarding it five stars with no ifs, ands or buts.

Birds Choice Solar Powered Layered Waterfall Rock Review

Birds Choice Solar Powered Layered Waterfall Rock

This will do the trick, but not without adjustments. Takes a greater depth of water than the photographs imply. Ad photos make it look like you can place it in an inch of water and it will work, but this is not the case. It's going to take 2.5 to 3 inches to work. It came with very poor instruction sheet, no connections to go from pump to rock, requiring you to fit the pump directly to the interior of the rock, resulting in the feet of the pump being another quarter to half inch off the floor of the birdbath which inturn requirs a deeper water level, not to mention the pump being suspended from it's outlet, rather than settled on it's feet. The vibrations of the pump, although slight, would probably over time cause undue wear on that plastic connection which is not meant to support the pump. Once a deep enough water level for operation is achieved, there is only about half the layered rock formation above water, completely doing away with any babbling water sounds and most of the water movement. The connections which DID come with the pump were not mentioned in the instruction sheet at ALL, and seem to be three water spouts meant to replace the rock formation, each spout creating a different water spray pattern. However, these do not fit onto the outlet of the pump and to use them would require a trip to Lowe's to find fittings to make the connections. A birdbath deep enough to accomodate this device will be so deep that none of the normal backyard birds one would hope to attract with this thing would get into it. A finch-sized bird attempting a bath in this tub would run a better than average risk of drowning. The only place they could approach the stream of water would be by standing right on top of the little rock pile. Since the water does not exit from the top, but rather down a couple of 'layers' of rock, access to the moving water is very restricted for the birds. For the price of this little ditty, I am VERY disappointed. I was duped into thinking I could bring it home, pop it into my birdbath and be done. Instead I am faced with a minor to medium sized Do-It-Yourself project which will cost some extra dollars/time/aggravation to complete.

Solar Birdbath Fountain Review

Solar Birdbath Fountain
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this birdbath because I liked the idea of constantly moving water in my birdbath, but I had to send the solar piece back once, as it was leaking water into the panel. The pump part is very fragile and cheaply made and broke within 6 months of owning it. I ended up throwing out the solar piece and leaving the resin insert in the bottom(in the winter, you can't use the solar panel when the temperature is below freezing)year round, to use as a regular bird bath. Whatever the inside of the bath was coated with, degraded and was floating in the water every time I cleaned it out, even though I followed manufacturer's guidelines for cleaning. Customer service for the company is pretty much useless and it was difficult to get a hold of a live person. Very disappointing!

Pond Logic Liquid Clear (Pond, Fountain & Bird Bath), 16 oz Review

Pond Logic Liquid Clear (Pond, Fountain and Bird Bath), 16 oz
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm really not able to tell whether this product is reducing the foul mess the birds make of the heated birdbath during this first winter. I clean out the birdbath every two weeks or so (mentally "holding my nose"), then fill it with fresh water, and add the correct proportion of Pond Logic, refilling the bath as needed.
The birdbath seems just as foul as the weeks go by, until I clean it out again. The heater should be keeping the water in a temperature range where the natural cleaner can do its work, but I'll re-evaulate when the warmer weather comes.
If this brand continues to perform poorly, I'll be checking out other brands down at my local bird shop.

Alpine TEC102 Fountain With Bell Shaped Fountain & Light Review

Alpine TEC102 Fountain With Bell Shaped Fountain and Light
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We ordered this fountain a week ago. For starters, the bulb went dead right out of the box. It wasn't a big issue; we replaced the bulb for under $5.00. The first bad thing about the fountain is overall design. The pump comes with suction cups on the bottom which are apparently supposed to anchor the pump to the bottom of the basin. Unfortunately, the hose that runs from the pump to the fountainhead is only about half the length it needs to be to reach the bottom. Second, the light in the fountain, which was the main selling point, does nothing to light the water as it bells out of the fountain. It only lights the birdpath portion. The water from the fountainhead is completely dark. With all the design flaws, it dows work well and gives an accent point to the yard, and the bubbling water is very soothing. It just doesn't show up at night.
Update:
Sunday, May 30 the bulb went dead again. It should have lasted two months. We are not replacing it because as I have said before the light does not allow the top of the fountain to be seen at night. Also, the pictures I've seen, including the one posted here, must be an artist's rendering. The instructions say to keep the pump pressure low. On that setting, the outpouring of water looks nothing like the bell shape in the picture. It's barely even a trickle. Also I do agree with the other reviewer who says the water blows out at the slightest breeze. It certainly does. Finally, it's billed as a fountain/birdbath, but none of the birds around here got that memo. I haven't seen a single bird anywhere near it. This product is NOT recommended.

Wishing Well Solar Water Fountain - Style 12841 Review

Wishing Well Solar Water Fountain - Style 12841
Average Reviews:

This solar birdbath fountain is exactly what it claims to be. It fits in with my landscape beautifully and the solar panel is sensitive so that a minimal amount of sunlight activates it. It has an AC backup but I do not use it since my fountain is out in my garden. AC works well. It is unobtrusive and I recommend everyone to purchase it if they want to save $$$ and have an Eco-friendly, bird-happy fountain.

Outdoor Birdbath Solar Fountain Review

Outdoor Birdbath Solar Fountain
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am so happy with this Solar Fountain, it is the first solar powered fountain I have purchased. Most people comment negatively on the fact it needs direct sunlight to work, but I expected that to be the case as there is not a battery back up. If you live in a predominantly cloudy climate then the fountain might disappoint, IT NEEDS DIRECT SUNLIGHT TO WORK. However I live in Florida so it works great for me. The thing that made me write the review, a year later I might add, is that I recently went away for four days and I forgot to emty the birdbath and remove the pump...oops! I thought for sure I had cooked it, I filled it and held my breath, I worried for nothing...here I sit a month later and it is still going strong. The birds and cats and even the bees drink out of it and its a great addition to our garden. I would reccomend this product and if I had burned out the pump I would have purchased this product again.

Fish Birdbath Fountain Review

We're very happy we found this. No way were we going to pay $200-$300 for a heavy, concrete fountain. This sits proudly on our deck under the oaks & pines in Julian where we can hear it from our sunroom windows. The birds just love it. Very good purchase. It fit our need perfectly. Better yet, it's light enough that we can store it easily if we don't want to leave it out in the snow and freezing weather.

3 Tier Acorn Water Fountain Review

3 Tier Acorn Water Fountain
Average Reviews:

This fountain has the most graceful design of all the fountains I have seen while shopping around. I just had to have it. It's also the perfect size for my garden because I have a grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes right beside it and I don't want the fountain to outstage the grotto. This fountain's alabasterite color matches the color of the Virgin's statue.
This fountain is popular with birds, cats (who step on my flower pots to reach for the water)and my little granddaughter whenever she visits. Therefore, I keep it clean and replace the water everyday. I do not use anti-algae for fear that the water might become toxic.
Once I used a brush to take off some algae deposits and the acorn finial just fell apart in my hand. I realized how delicate it was - the wall so thin, you'd think it's made of porcelain. But my son put it back together using bathroom grout and sealed it with Krazy glue. It's working again, just as beautifully.
I love this fountain.

Universal Solar Fountain Insert (Black) (9"W x 2.5"H x 9"D) Review

Universal Solar Fountain Insert (Black) (9W x 2.5H x 9D)
Average Reviews:

We had purchased about 5 years ago, a solar fountain. Over the last year, the old solar plate and motor where out of commission. I was able to extract the motor and panel from this unit and install it (near exact fit) and it is working great. The motor is adjustable as to output and is much stronger than the original. We live in Arizona, so no problem with solar power exclusively. For this unit, if there is no sun, there is no battery back up, but it works just fine. Has a really robust flow.. I just use it without any inserts, so it shoots up a straight stream of water, at just under full power, it is a thick stream that goes up a good 4-6 inches. A great price and as a unit in and of itself.. would make a very nice addition to any bird water type fountain/ bird bath - adding a nice sound and look of the water streaming. The birds just love it as well. Highly recommended in a very sunny area. If you are in the mid-west or east, you likely want to get one with a battery back up for more sustained flow through the day. Also a vary fair price. The seller, Intrepid Business Solutions, shipped same day as ordered and it arrived, with standard shipping from Florida to Arizona in a short 3 days or so. Very pleased.
