I incorrectly thought that there might be some functioning in leaf-dappled sunlight, or in sunlight that strikes the water's surface from an angle in the morning. This is NOT the case. The fountain does not run at all unless it is being exposed to very strong, direct sunlight.

But, between the Open Mouth and Close Mouth, I still recommend the Open Mouth for pure bang for your buck.

Stock Tank Deicer is Solar Powered Aerator Review

(More customer reviews)This review is oriented to describing the unit assembly workmanship as observed on delivery, and not the performance, reliability, and durability with use. The solar aerator works as advertized, point at the sun and the air pump comes on. However, the unit assembly workmanship is poor. The unit has four major components: 20W solar panel, electric current converter/regulator, aeration pump and housing, and 12V battery housing. The current converter/regulator is attached to the back of the solar panel. The aeration pump is in a housing box attached to the top of the 12V battery housing. The aeration pump housing has holes for electric wires and aeration tubing that are not caulked to weatherize the pump. If aeration vents are required for the pump, these should be provided and appropriately protected from rain, ice, and snow. The aeration pump housing is attached to the top of the battery housing by 4 small screws, two are stripped and pulled out on delivery. Bolts and washers would have worked better since this attachment application bears the weight of multiple components and streses of wind. The top of the battery housing has open holes allowing water to enter the housing, and there are no drain holes for escape of the water. Although the battery requires aeration, it would be desireable to protect the battery from water dripping into the housing. Finally the u-bolt stems that attach the battery housing to a sign post did not match the holes drilled to pass the u-bolt through the battery housing, so the u-bolt protrudes into the area where the battery resides. I will have to do some shop work to correct or improve these attachment, ventilation, and water protection problems before deploying the unit for outdoor use.

Smart Garden Infinity 1650 gph Magnetic Drive In-Line/Submersible Pump with 16-Foot Cable Review

(More customer reviews)This pump has been working for a year now in my 2500 gallon fish pond and it is still working very well even with all of the battles I am having with string algea. I have to take the pump out of the pond every 2-3 weeks, take it apart and get all the string algea out of it that is caught everywhere inside. Even with all of this stuff clogging up the pump every so often, it forces water through without problems. I am really hoping this pump lasts for at least 5-10 years before needing to be replaced. I really like it.

Smart Solar 20622R01 Country Gardens Solar Birdbath Fountain, Gray Weathered Stone Finish Review

(More customer reviews)Recently purchased the smart solar country gardens birdbath, 20622R01, as a gift. The birdbath is OK, but the fountain is junk. Works only in extremely bright direct sunlight, and then just barely makes a splash. The birds are laughing, but I'm not!
It also arrived in it's original box, so the gift checkbox is a waste of time.
One month later, revise this review to say the finish is coming off the birdbath now, so the whole thing is junk.

Nature's Foundry, ZSK-402, Universal Solar Pump Kit Review

(More customer reviews)I was skeptical, having previously purchased a larger contraption that came with a powerful pump and a separate solar panel that was nothing but annoying. The power was intermittent at best and we gave up on it very early into its trial. We are using this little pump in a tall pot that has a sealed bottom. We had to rig a little flotation device underneath so it sits atop the water (and follows the water down as it splashes or evaporates out), but otherwise I am actually thrilled with its performance. For what it is, an inexpensive solar fountain, it works better than I had expected. As long as the sun is hitting the panel, it shoots out a stream of water (if that's the attachment you prefer) 6-10" high. I would not recommend using it in a shallow dish, as the water tends to splatter or be blown out of the vessel.

I read the negative reviews for this SOLAR pump (some even complain that it only works when it is sunny - - - duh). I have had my first one now for three years and I love it. It couldn't be easier to set up - a couple of screws, stick the panel into ground (it can also be mounted) and put the thingy in the birdbath and VOILA!
It isn't a fountain but it is perfect for a birdbath. I played with all the different heads that send the water up higher - about 8 to 10 inches - and opted to just use it with no head and let it bubble to a height of about 4 inches on sunny days and the birds go nuts for it - sometimes they sit right on top of it . . . bet that feels good on a hot day!
I confess that I am not that diligent about cleaning it out around the filter BUT this little pump is so forgiving that it keeps going anyway. Occasionally it needs to be taken apart if some debris gets in (you can tell when it happens because it makes a funny humming sound) but the maintenance is so minimal that only a birdbrain would find it a chore.
I have had the water wigglers in birdbaths - they're okay but they get funky and rusty - that is why I am buying my second and third solar pump to replace the wigglers in the other baths.
