P418 POND FLOAT DEICER 1250W Review

I have 100 gallon plastic in ground pond which is only 18" deep and is approximately 4'W x 7'L. Currently it's -6 below and none of the Pond has iced over. I see our fish directly under the heater when it's cold. I keep the water circulating 24/7 in the pond with a pond pump which also has a fountain head in the middle of the pond. Recently we had over 36" of snow and the pond was burried in a drift. There was a 9" or so portion of the pond that was kept open. Most of the pond was slush in the water but my fish came through it all with no problem. I think it was due to the combination of the circulating water and the heater as well. I would recommend this pond heater to anyone who has a plastic preformed pond. None of the pond has froze even in sub zero temps which I find amazing and I'm sure this Pond Heater has helped keep it Ice Free.
Update: 2/15/2009
Since this time I have had three of these things and I won't purchase another since they only last one season. In fact the last one I bought didn't last that long. When it works it works great but just not long enough for me to justify the purchase. I'm keeping my pond ICE free with the fountain with the head removed, and a waterfall just to keep the water circulating. I wish I could change the stars I gave originally but it won't let me.

Solar Pond Fountain Review

Solar Pond Fountain

If your pond spends enough of the day in full, straight-overhead sunlight, this fountain is wonderful. I incorrectly thought that there might be some functioning in leaf-dappled sunlight, or in sunlight that strikes the water's surface from an angle in the morning. This is NOT the case. The fountain does not run at all unless it is being exposed to very strong, direct sunlight.

Aquascape - 200 Watt Floating Pond Deicer Review

Aquascape - 200 Watt Floating Pond Deicer

I purchased my unit in September 2010 installed my unit in late November/early December 2010, worked well for a month. Now it is frozen solid, and is not maintaining an opening in the ice, as advertised. Instructions forbid use of extension cord, but the cord on the unit is only about 10 feet long (I did not measure exactly, but it is much shorter than their cords on their pumps). In my opinion, a poorly designed product, and now based upon the experience of the unit failing 1 month into a three to four month period of subfreezing weather, the quality would appear to be suspect. Maybe I just got a bad one. But having too short of a cord and forbidding the use of an extension cord is a bad design choice that is going to leave you scratching your head looking for options. A call to Aquascape said the instructions fordidding the use of an extension cord was probably a precaution to insure that the connection at the end of an extension cord would not be allowed to become submerged, and assured me that the use of an extension cord would be O.K. So, I guess technically I used the heater in a manner that was contrary to the instructions. My heater has a blue plastic top instead of the green one shown in the picture. I suspect this is only a cosmetic diffence as it appears to be identical to the unit shown in the picture in every other way. I purchased my unit directly from Aquascape.

K&H Manufacturing Perfect Climate Deluxe Pond Heater Review

I have tried a lot of heaters/ de-icers, including trough heaters. All were similar in wattage. Most did not work well or were unreliable. I have used this one for the last 2 winters and not only did it work great, it kept a wide area open except in very cold with high wind. Even then it kept the immediate area open. Their guide was very helpful, I bought the wattage they suggested for my zone (N. IL). I am buying another one now as a back-up, in case I can't find it later. I use it with a thermo cube to cut down on unnecessary running.

I am using the sinking heater to keep the water trough for the horses thawed this winter. It is working very well even through extreme cold. Good price, good performance so far. I would recommend it.
