The Pet Fountain itself is fabulous...and these filters do work and catch all the guck in the air, hair, dust, etc. to keep it working well and the water clean. My cats (and dog) love the fresh, moving water. The filters themselves?We live in the country, so there are dirt paths to the house and a lot of dust comes in and our pets are indoor/outdoor animals. The filter needs changing every month, so for a year's worth you will need 6 packages of 2 filters, but they are not expensive and do keep the Fountain working optimally.

(More customer reviews)We got these to use with the petmate drinking fountain we previously bought. We have a relatively high level of chlorination in our water and my fiancee is convinced that the cats don't like it (even though they happily drink from any toilet in the house).
The issue we ran into is that after around a week the carbon starts to clump together. This massively reduces the flow through the filter and causes the water to back up behind it. This then causes the fountain to become very noisy.
I don't know if this is a recurring problem with all users but the lifespan on these things is supposed to be a month so we're not doing so well. I have another 5 to use so we'll get through them then probably switch to using filtered water. (or toilet water if my fiancee isn't looking)

Drinkwell with 50 Oz Reservoir Review

(More customer reviews)First of all, I know that on the other versions of the fountain (with or without this extra reservoir) there were reviews stating that the fountain was noisy or that their cats would not drink from it. This was not my experience, the fountain runs pretty quietly you just need to make sure there is enough water in the bowl (enough to cover the little hole at the base of the bowl where filtration gets cycled through.)
You will need to give your pets time to adjust. My two kittens are 6 months old and they have always drank from a bowl. When I first hooked up the fountain they stuck their paws in and played a little, but mostly looked at it nervously for a couple days. I left their regular bowl next to it and noticed after a few days one cat started to prefer the fountain. After a week I took the regular bowl away at meal time and my other cat started to drink from the fountain. I think most cats will need a gradual change to this, don't expect them to like it overnight.
The bowl itself holds more water than both my cats need for 2 or 3 days. Getting a reservoir attachment wasn't needed, but I got one just so I could always feel secure they'd have plenty of water if something happened and I was away from home. This may be different with dogs, as I think they drink way more water.

The 50 oz. reservoir container was INSTANTLY KNOCKED OVER by my curious kitten. I had even tucked it by the wall in a position LESS likely to be knocked over... but this is designed so poorly that if your pet likes to jump over it or put their paw up on it, bam... falls over and empties a ton of water all over the floor! (Yes it was "secured" by the little plastic "latch" piece on the back, but it's very flimsy. Plus, there is no way to flip the reservoir over after you fill it without spilling at least a little bit of water.)
So, now I use the fountain by itself. I add a cup of water directly to the bowl at feeding time every day. It stays pretty clean, way cleaner than the old bowl, so I give it a good scrub about once a week. (Compared to the old bowl which was dirty daily.)
Unless you have a dog or need to be away from the house for more than a couple days, I'd just get the fountain without the reservoir container. Drinkwell Pet Fountain

Beckett 7040210 Pond Filter Review

(More customer reviews)First, the seller, OK Sales did a fine job. They packaged and shipped as you would wish. The pump, however has issues. This came with a nice filter box and generous filter pads. This is ideal for my pond, under the live oak tree. The pump, while listed as 210 gallons, was very small in size and was not a very strong push. It went at one speed then drastically dropped pressure to a dribble. I contacted the Beckett company. They were VERY nice and agreed to ship another pump for a $5 fee. OK, I'll go along with that. I haven't received the new one yet as I just completed the transaction with Beckett. If I had it to do over, I'd go with another Pondmaster brand.

At first I thought it would be too much power but its perfect - the fountains are high quality! Much better then the little 100gph found I had in here before. Its full adjustable. The filter keeps out large debri, the fountain heads are high quality, and it has extra power/ability to run a seperate hose to a small frog that shoots water from its mouth in addition to the fountain itself. Highly recommend! Much cheaper then Lowes/HD products - same thing would run over $100!

(More customer reviews)I've been ordering this product, carbon filters for the PetMate Water Fountain, for nearly two years, and have been very pleased. I should point out that the quality of the product does not reflect on the store, because they do not make this product, they only sell it. The last order came in on time, and the store is excellent, ship on time, etc. However, the quality of this product is now horrible!! I followed the directions about rinsing the filter before using, just as I always have, but black dust is clinging to the sides of the white plastic fountain, and my three cats will not drink the water. I've changed the filters three times, with the same results. I hope the store(s) will make the manufacturer aware of this problem, because I will have to discontinue using it, fearing that my cats may be harmed by the excess carbon in their water. I really hope this filter problem gets fixed, because I really like the fountain, and my cats have always loved it.

(More customer reviews)My 4 cats love this fountain and they drink a lot more water now. Depending upon how you have the flow lever adjusted, the water stream can either be silent or a gentle trickle noise.
I have had 3 of these fountains in 3 years. The only problem I have had is with the pump. Like any water pump, the water level must be above the pump so the pump will not be damaged. I burnt out the first pump this way (shame on me). The second pump became severely clogged and stopped when one cat vomited grass into the dish while I was away (naughty kitty). The third pump dying is a mystery to me. It wasn't even a year old. Unfortunately, I just returned it today before reading one reviewer's directions on taking the pump apart for cleaning.
Even with the pump issue, I'll buy this product again. The cats love it, it is easy to clean, and fresh water is good for my cats' health. By the way, I can't imagine how some people are getting algae, etc., with this system. Basic cleaning is required of any food or water dish. The only part of this unit that cannot be cleaned with a sponge is a narrow plastic funnel that brings the water up to the fountain head. A Q-Tip works great for cleaning that.

And since the filters are nothing more than activated carbon you can open up the plastic filter case and replenish the used activated carbon with new AC you can buy at any pet store. It's sold in bulk at a very cheap price.
These activated carbon filters will certainly remove a lot of impurities from your water so the concept of having a filter to clean your pet's water is a great idea. I've always filled my pet's water supplies with water filtered through an end of a kitchen faucet filter so maybe that's all the filtering pets really need. But these activated carbon filters will give you the added assurance that your furry family will be drinking ultra clean and good tasting water. Just like humans, animals deserve the very best too.
It's always a good idea to periodically clean your pet's water container and after cleaning thoroughly rinse the container with a lot of fresh water. A good tip during cleaning is to add a tablespoon of bleach to your cleaning water to kill any bacteria in the container. Just make sure you rinse away all traces of the bleach after cleaning. Instead of buying expensive cleaning tools designed specifically for pets you could instead use old toothbrushes or foam cleaning brushes from your local dollar stores. They are much cheaper and do the job just as well or better.
One last note: If you are a do-it-yourself type person you can not only save a lot of money by refilling these water filters with cheap activated carbon, you also decrease the amount of (almost) indestructible plastic in landfills. (More customer reviews)This is my second season with this pump. Solar panels are nice and are not too much of an eye sore. I was able to intergrate them with my garden that surrounds my pond. I would have given this product 5 stars if it had a prefilter before it entered the pump. My pond is small with a sand base and the sand has a tendency to clog the fountain, so I switched to a spitter instead which seams to circulate better. I stored the unit over the winter in my greenhouse with the panels hooked up to the battery/power control unit. The pump started right up this spring, which I used to create a siphon to drain my pond to clean. The power unit is nice, if you set it on auto it will automatically kick on the same time everyday. This is a great pump for a small pond, mine is less then 2,500 gallons. I have a diverter valve that goes to a spitter and to a small waterfall. Overall a great product and would highly recommend.
